Bear sightings in Kyoto
Asiatic black bears have recently been sighted in Kyoto City. Encounters are more likely in the early morning or after dusk. If you happen to come across a bear, do not panic or make any sudden movements or noises that might agitate it. Calmly leave the area and ensure your safety.
Please take the following precautions when going into or near mountains.
How to avoid encountering a bear
Check for any recent information regarding bear sightings.
Travel in groups whenever possible.
Carry items that make noise, such as bear bells or radios.
What to do if you encounter a bear
Remain calm and slowly move away from the area. Do not make eye contact.
If you encounter a bear at close range, protect your head and neck with both arms and crouch down.
